Secret Santa Gives Hope to the Weary

A little story to brighten your day -- there is hope!

Secret Santa Pays It Forward with Cash to Strangers—$20,000 Worth

November 30, 2011; Source: MSNBC | How to encourage community and philanthropy. . . . Reading, PA, has been designated the poorest city in America, and the day before yesterday it was where a man calling himself “Secret Santa” distributed $20,000 in one hundred dollar bills to strangers. The man, whose name is not available but who appears to be a successful businessman, is apparently carrying on the tradition of Larry Stewart, who, as his own version of Secret Santa, gave away $1.3 million to pay forward a handout that had been given to him in the past.Secret Santa only asks that those he gave to pay it forward, and he plans to head to other cities in the coming weeks.

Client Spotlight

Summer 2011

The mission of Amazing Place is to provide fellowship, memory care and wellness for adults with mild to moderate memory loss and support to their families and the community. Amazing Place, formerly known as The Seniors Place, began with an idea from a visionary minister at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, Rev. Dean Robinson. His vision of providing a therapeutic day program to serve the increasing number of adults with early stage memory loss and their families became a reality in 1996. Amazing Place is celebrating its 15th Anniversary this year.

How ESCH Helped

Over the past seven years ESCH consultants Roger Rolke, Milt Rose, and Roy Serpa have worked with Amazing Place on a series of planning projects. The ESCH consultants created a Marketing Plan which quickly brought their original facility to capacity; a Strategic Plan which led to a capital campaign and construction of a five times larger, state of the art facility located on 3735 Drexel, Houston, Texas 77027 which was occupied in the summer of 2010; and a Transition Plan to guide the preparation for and move to the new facility.

Roger Rolke stated, "Working with Amazing Place has been very rewarding and has been a highlight of my ESCH experience. Their mission is meeting a crucial and growing social service need in the Houston community. Their exceptional staff and board are a joy to work with! Plans are thoughtfully prepared and faithfully executed. The continued growth of Amazing Place while improving upon their exemplary program quality is a real tribute to our partnership."

"ESCH consultants and their collective guidance have had a major impact on the growth and success of Amazing Place over the past six years," states Tracey Brown, Executive Director. "Each major step we have undertaken was first defined by a structured, well organized and thoughtful plan to move the organization forward, thanks to our ESCH consultants," adds Brown. "Roger, Roy and Milt have been instrumental in assessing our needs and helping both board and staff chart the path ahead -- we are very grateful to ESCH for their support."

Next Steps

A new Strategic Plan to help the organization reach and maintain capacity and evaluate future growth options was completed in June of 2011. Rolke is currently serving on the Advisory Board for Amazing Place. To learn more about Amazing Place, visit their website at http://www.amazingplacehouston.org/.

Client Spotlight: Next Step Fund

At the March Board of Trustees meeting, the board shared a "Mission Moment" with Lee Next Step Fund's new Executive Director Steve Amstatz and Monica Piquet-Rodriguez, Founder. The Lee Next Step Fund, also known as the Next Step Fund, works to connect low-income, at-risk youth to life-changing college- and career- preparatory learning experiences beyond the traditional high school classroom. These programs, or "Fantastic Learning Opportunities," challenge students' in new ways and push them to learn and develop beyond their comfort zone.

As a result, FLOs propel students to develop the knowledge, skills, and habits that are characteristics of college-bound individuals and positive, productive adults... all while they are still in high school. ESCH consultants

Hugh Williams, John Ranney and Bill Bobo helped them operationalize their plan and served to inspire their amazing growth to include Eastwood High School, as well as Lee. For more information, go to: www.leenextstepfund.org.

New Program Launch!

Soon, we will launch a new program,"Developing Development". This program, was developed and taught to new trainers in February, George Hawkins, DOD, Houston Arboretum & Nature Center; Karen Cornelius, former Asst. Texas Director, Nature Conservancy; Catherine Del Paggio, and me, as well as previous consultants Ron Swofford and Jane Harding, by Aileen Preonas, DDP Program Co-Founder of Executive Service Corps of Southern California. It has been extremely successful for them and we know that many nonprofits are looking for ways to enhance fundraising efforts. All desperately need reasonably priced assistance to understand how to gather new resources effectively.

Introducing New ESCH Services!

ESCH is now offering two new services in addition to consulting and seminars:

Executive Leadership Coaching

We currently have several open slots for one-on-one leadership development coaching. Professionally-trained coaches work with executive directors and emerging leaders in a coach-coachee relationship for six months. Through one- to two-hour weekly face to-face meetings, the leader develops and enhances specific leadership skills chosen by the leader. To learn more about this program, submit an request for assistance application and insert "coaching" in the current needs section. To hear what our clients think about the program, watch Betsy Ballard from the Houston Food Bank share her experience of ESCH's coaching program in the video below.

Financial Fitness for Nonprofits

FFNP, developed by the Executive Service Corps of Washington, helps organizations establish robust financial management processes. The program begins with an assessment of a nonprofit’s financial management processes in 22 areas, followed by a presentation, provided at a board meeting or retreat, to ensure that the full board has a better understanding of its fiduciary role and another presentation to senior-level staff on budgeting and financial management.

Each organization then participates in a two-hour session on financial policies and procedures. At the end of the session, the organization will have a model set of policies and procedures that can be customized as needed, a glossary of key financial terms, and an understanding of the importance of establishing a management culture that supports good internal controls and financial practices. Presentations are individualized for each organization. Finally, the program offers individualized consultation for more in-depth issues. To learn more about this program, submit an request for assistance application and insert "financial fitness" in the current needs section.
